He is the politician who led Britain to victory against Nazi Germany, and is remembered for his impassioned, eloquent speeches and his bold, decisive leadership at a time of national crisis. Winston Churchill was born in , to an aristocratic family that had long dominated the British elite. This was a period of British imperial expansion, and the Victorian age was defined by its paternalistic attitude to the subject peoples of colonized territories. During the Boer war, Churchill was working as a journalist and sent to cover the conflict in South Africa. The Boer war represents a dark stain on the British record in Africa; the British policy of incarcerating indigenous Africans and the families of Boer guerrilla fighters led to the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children in disease-riddled concentration camps.

List of redheads
They ranged from girls barely out of high school to mature mothers, from working-class women to aristocrats, from the plain to the beautiful, from the prim and proper to wild high-lifers. The only women from the Western Allies to bear arms in action during the Second World War, they suffered torture, the misery of the concentration camps, and death at the hands of Nazi butchers. They were a band of sisters such as has not been seen before or since, and the only thing they had in common was language—they all spoke French. Now, sixty-seven years after peace broke out in Europe, all but one or two are dead.

Eleven of this year's Churchill Fellows will travel to eight countries to ways of improving palliative and end of life care. Their mission is to bring back successful ideas and inspire change in their communities and professions across the UK. Discover more about this category.
